Maul: Shadow Lord (Two Boots Ruins Everything Again)

Darth Maul isn’t scary because he’s loud. He’s scary because he sounds like he believes every bitter thing he says. We sit down to unpack Maul Shadow Lord and why this animated Star Wars series feels so focused, so tense, and so intentionally crafted that it demands your full attention.

Cold Open And Show Setup

If the galaxy has no place for monsters, perhaps we make one. This is Project Geekology, episode 161. Tonight, Maul Shadow Lord. Hi guys, my name's Dakota. I'm one-third of your host tonight. SPEAKER_00And I don't I don't think I have anything special to add to that. But yes, we are going to be covering Maul Shadow Shadow Lord. It just ended on Star Wars Day, right? I think.

SPEAKER_05Dakota, that was an amazing Vario impression. I gotta say. Uh I've that or was that two boots? I can't I'm I'm trying I'm trying to do that. That was two boots.

SPEAKER_05I'm really excited to talk about uh this mole show. I've got do I have my mall socks on? No, no, I think I've got Kylo Ren socks on. I grabbed the wrong pair this morning. But either way, I'm ready, uh I'm all Star Wars up and uh excited to talk about this show.
SPEAKER_03Alright. So before uh we get into it, we are missing a uh now a recurring guest. Uh Jen, my wife, is uh under the weather this week and she's taking a back seat. She's she's uh she's in bed now. But um the show must go on. So uh we are going to continue talking about uh what we what we do best here nonsense. And to do that, we're gonna start us off with Anthony.
Games And Movies Check-In
SPEAKER_03What have you been up to, my friend?
SPEAKER_00What have I been up to? Um I have been playing that gotcha game, the NTE neverness to Everness. They just dropped a new banner. I got that new character, Hotori. Um, I actually j literally just pulled her today. She I think she dropped last night, and I started last night and got it I got a couple of her items and like the skin, and then I finally actually got the character. So so I'm already on that front. Also on also this past weekend, I decided to go to the movies and see Mortal Kombat 2. Nice. It it was fun. I mean, like the first one, it was fun. I don't like I feel like I I enjoyed the originals a little bit more, even though they were super campy, but like these were still like pretty pretty good. Like, I mean, well, pretty decent for for what we got.
SPEAKER_03I still have yet to watch the first one. What? But um, yeah, I turned it on one time and Jen's like, what is this? And we just didn't continue past that point. Um uh, but eventually I will I will catch it on some syndication or other.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
SPEAKER_05Our uh, you know, uh the giant of a man, Ted Turner, uh rest in peace. That like TBS, I think would I I feel like TBS played like Mortal Kombat like a lot, a lot, a lot. Like I just caught it by I would catch it in pieces by accident. Like I didn't I didn't even like want to, and it just pulled me in. Would you say the aunt did you feel like I don't know, because I'm trying to remember like Mortal Kombat like it was a huge game for me when I was growing up. Like it was controversial, and you know, some kids weren't allowed to play it, and we had to like sneak it at other people's houses. So like the movie coming out was a big deal, and like I think that like you said it was really campy, but I overlooked it. Uh did you like did you have any kind of ties to it going into it, or did you just like like the origin like the originals?
SPEAKER_00Um I I did I did actually grow up playing Mortal Kombat. I think I played it on Sega, Sega Genesis. Okay, cool. Yeah. I think that yeah, like my my dad had a bunch of consoles. He had Sega Genesis, he had um Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo, like I mean he he was pretty much like him growing up is essentially like how I am now. Like he would just he he was all about like um you know getting getting the new consoles, getting the games and stuff. So yeah, he he had Mortal Kombat. He had a few of them. I I I remember playing it on Sega. I don't remember if I if I ever remember playing it on Super Nintendo. Because I I know that it that they had them on Super Nintendo also, but I'm pretty sure it was Sega. And he had like it was crazy because he had like regular controllers, but the one that I played with the most was like the it was it it was like the hit stick one. Okay, yeah but like you know, it was like the arcade so so yeah, I would that that's the control that I used to use like the most playing games on the Sega Genesis, but yeah, man. Yeah, I I I grew up playing Mortal Camp Mortal Kombat, but like over the years, like I'm I would play some here and there. Like I wasn't like a I'm playing it every every year. I think the only the only fighting games that I really play like mostly are like Super Smash Brothers. And it's like not even like and it's not even like regularly. But if I was to buy and play a a fighting game, it would be Super Smash Brothers. But yeah, no, I I I definitely I grew up playing Mortal Kombat. I remember thinking like the the the graphics looked weird because they kind of looked like real people put into the game and then like later on I found out that that's because they were real people, just like superimposed on video game characters. But um yeah, it it's uh yeah, I grew up on it. How about you, Dakota? What have you been up
Mortal Kombat Memories And New Sequel
SPEAKER_00to?
SPEAKER_03Uh well I didn't see Mortal Kombat 2, but I did play a little bit of NTE. I have been trying to um I haven't put a bunch of hours into it, um, but I have put a handful. And I am really enjoying it. Uh I think the you know, I think I mentioned it last week, but I'm really finding that the world is really immersive. Um you can pretty much talk to almost every NPC, and there's like a lot of them. There the amount of stuff there is to do in this mobile game slash well it's it's on PlayStation as well, but the fact that it's uh optimized for mobile, um, and I think it's meant to it's intended to be a mobile game because it's a gotcha game, you know. I feel like most gotcha games are mobile games. Um the fact that there's so much to do, like there's there's even like racing uh like sub-mini games, there's tons and tons of quests. You have uh event stuff that that gets added into the game regularly. Um and it's only been out for like two weeks now, and it's it's already massive. Like I'm I'm very, very impressed just with the the amount of stuff there is to do. Um the story is somewhat engaging, you know. It kind of it kind of follows a almost like anime, uh it kind of reminds me, you know, it's it's nothing like this, but it kind of reminds me of Fairy Tale. Uh the the anime where uh a guy and like he he joins a guild and they they go on quests and do different adventures out like with the guild. It kind of feels like that. Um so I I I like that. Uh but I did do something uh new this week that I think is uh really worth your time. I read a new book called Dungeon Crawler Carl. I've heard about that.
SPEAKER_00I think there's a show being made uh about it.
SPEAKER_03I hope there's a show being made because it's uh definitely going to be like massive. So the best way I can probably put it is take uh take Sword Art Online, um add in like the Mojo verse from like the X-Men game or the X-Men series, um uh you know, like the Intergalactic TV series, uh the Mojo verse, and um a little bit of Hunger Games uh mechanics, like background mechanics, and kind of mash that into one. And it's basically uh the the short like back of the book premise would be, you know, like all of a sudden uh most of the world is killed as all buildings are flattened. Anyone under a roof is is immediately instantly killed at like 2.23 in the morning uh on January 3rd, whatever. But from and anyone who is outside continues to live and is invited to join the dungeon for the amusement of an intergalactic audience. Um basically, like there are 18 floors in this dungeon, each floor getting progressively harder. And uh you follow a guy named Carl, who, you know, it's 2.23 in the morning. He was he was basically the only reason he was outside was because his ex-girlfriend's cat jumped out the window, so he was trying to save the he was trying to get the cat back inside. So he's wearing boxers and like no shoes throughout the entire book.
SPEAKER_00That sounds like an anime for sure.
SPEAKER_03And the humor is amazing. Uh it it's uh pretty much as soon as he enters the dungeon um and he becomes a crawler. Um he because he's the first person ever to like bring a cat into the dungeon, um he gets a special biscuit for the cat, and the cat is now able to talk, so it's no longer a pet, but it's also a it's a it's another crawler in his party. So it's like he has a talking cat that still acts and is basically a cat, um that eventually gets the the power to like shoot like uh missiles out of its head, you know, and it's it's just it's the funniest story ever. And um, yeah, so it's it's kind of cool because like they they go on these like adventures and you start seeing how they're leveling each of their characters' stats um and interacting with other people, and there's there's a I don't want to say that there's like a whole lot of heart yet, but I can tell that's where the story's going because I've only read the first book. There's there's literally eight books. Like I think the eighth book just came out last week. Apparently, like people love this series. So I I mean I've only read the first book, but I I'm really, really enjoying it. I just think it's such a clever concept. It's a it's a clever mash up of like lit RPG and you know game show mechanics in in the in the vein of like Hunger Games and Mojo verse, basically.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, it's in development. There's a TV show in development for Peacock.
SPEAKER_03Peacock? Yeah it's uh does Peacock have like mature shows, or is it only Peacock's NBC? I know that anyway, I know it's it's a very like mature book in in terms of like there's a lot of cursing, there's a lot of like um crazy antics uh that just go on because you are basically reading about um a bunch of adults who are you know trying to survive in this crazy world that everything is pitted against them. But um, yeah, so what what were we saying, Anthony? You what about Peacock?
SPEAKER_00Um I they they possibly do. They they did do that that reboot of The Fresh Prince, but like not funny, but and like serious. So and it it looks like it it doesn't look it doesn't look like a kid shows or or like a show that like that's family friendly, so who knows possibly.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's I was listening to it and I'm thinking this would make a great movie, but when I realized that this is like a series of books, it would play much better as a TV show. Um because it
Dungeon Crawler Carl’s Wild Premise
SPEAKER_03there's there's like a TV show within the series that they are basically like every 30 hours they have like a highlight reel of like all the the dungeon crawlers from uh across Earth basically doing crazy stuff, and eventually these guys, uh Carl and his his uh ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, um, become like intergalactically famous, and uh it's it's just so good. It's it's really it's really fun. I I told my dad about it yesterday, and he calls me today. He goes, Hey, your mom's reading your book. I'm like, What do you mean? The book you told me about, Dungeon Crawler Carl, your mom's reading it. I was just like, that's random. But anyway, uh that's what I've been up to. Uh let's throw it over to Rich.

Testing Season And Lego Batman Hype
SPEAKER_05uh, I I'm not uh super exciting the last couple weeks. Uh last week I'm still mired. I'm in my second week of testing, uh running tests at school, so it's kind of uh hectic.
SPEAKER_03You have had a bunch of uh testing the past couple weeks. Is that over? Are you continuing your own?
SPEAKER_05I have uh so next the next time we record, I will be in a celebratory mood because I'll be done. So I'm very excited about that. I'm also uh more excited, looking forward to uh I'm gonna wait a little bit, but I'm getting the uh I've made it very clear to my family that my birthday and Father's Day are you know very close together uh every year. So uh I I was like, hey, you guys hear about that Lego Batman? It looks uh great. And I uh was watching like some videos uh very obviously uh on YouTube, like reviews, and put the volume very loud, like when Lauren was sitting next to me. So um I'm hoping that uh very shortly, gents, I can uh talk about that. Because I am did you know that they've included the song Kiss for Murose by Seal? Like like it they're doing the ad campaign for it, everything it looks great. I love Lego games. It's it's you know it it excites the completionist in me, right? Like the Lego games are a real goal, like I can I don't think there's been a Lego game that I've played except for the Lore of the Rings one, which I I don't know, I think it's because it's a little bit older and I played it out of kind of order, so I've played the newer ones and it's a little clunkier. But uh other than that, I've like a hundred percent uh like platinum to every single one. You know, and I used to say, Oh, this is because I'm playing with my son, and I'd be like, hey babe, you know, I'm just teaching Charlie how to play video games, and he started when he was like three, and really it was just so that I could play those games. I love them, so I'm really excited about the Batman game, it looks great.
SPEAKER_03Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet.
Why Maul Sounds So Broken
SPEAKER_03Shall we jump into Mole Shadow Lord? Let's do it. I just love the way I love the way this guy speaks. Um so forgive me for the the cringe opener. Um according to to Jen, I sound kind of like Mole when I do that. Um that's in my head how my cat talks, you know, like uh every night he wants us to throw around his his little uh his like mice toys. He has he gets like really excited before bed to to throw play fetch with mice, basically. So in my head, I'm like, it's time to throw the verb in. You know, like that's how I imagine he talks. But anyway, um what's up with this guy? Like, why why is he so hateful? Um like what what's his story? How do you guys interpret this this madman?
SPEAKER_05Well, uh I mean, well, first, uh Sam Whitmer is unbelievable. I I I almost think that Sam Whitmer like knows Maul better than like Dave Faloney will ever know Maul, in a way. Like he he's so tied to the character that he I'm so glad they got him to do the voice, and I think he's just so amazing at playing a guy that you don't really get. You know, we're we're even you know, we'll talk about it later, but episode eight, my goodness, like it Whitner goes on record to basically say that epido episode eight was like meant to confuse people and like demonstrate that Maul is in some ways also an unreliable narrator. Uh so there there's just I thought this was masterful. It's definitely a show that requires like intense watching. I I in this age, you know, where you know a lot of watching can be done with your phone, like the every the silent moments are important, you know, like everything matters here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Uh that's actually a good way on it. And I was kind of I was kind of in the wrong headspace when I was watching this, I think, because I was a little bit distracted throughout most of it. I mean I was I was with it, you know, I was watching it and everything, but I didn't have my full it was it didn't capture my full attention like uh other Star Wars shows have in the past. Um and I kind of regret my not my attitude, but just like the mindset that I was in when I was watching it, because this I you know it's instant you can tell it's so good. You could tell the art style is so beautiful. The um the the still backgrounds with uh the moving characters
Painted Animation And Required Attention
SPEAKER_03in front of them. I love that so much because it kind of evokes the um the original trilogy, like in in the sense that like a lot of like the the bigger sci-fi backdrops that they had back then were actually map paintings and like a corner uh slice of that image was dedicated to what they actually recorded on film, and they actually did stuff like that with this, where they at they in certain certain scenes, like especially especially establishing shots, they would have um just uh a painted background and the characters would move in front of it. I love that stuff. I I thought that that was such a cool homage to that. Um but you know, going back to to what you're saying about how this like every little thing is important, it's uh it's a sleeper hit for sure. Like it's you know, it's I don't want to say it's like Andor Um in the sense of uh like maturity, but it's definitely not it's not uh a children's cartoon. What are your thoughts, Ann? SPEAKER_00No, yeah, I I I absolutely agree. One of my favorite things are the hand painted backgrounds. Even the characters themselves, you can you can tell that they're like hand painted, that the art style is um you you see the the imperfections in in like the the coloring, but it it it really adds to the character of the show and I really I I I came into this into the show you know, like pretty much like with with the the the mindset like okay this you know I've heard really good things about it, so I was like let me you know let me see what this is about and it it grabbed me just like right away absolutely grabbed me and yeah it it's it's not it's definitely not a children's show it definitely it definitely draws some inspiration though it you know it leans a little bit more on like probably the latter seasons of of like the Clone Wars and then with some maturity injected in it from like maybe like Andor, but not as mature. Like you could like anybody could watch this, but like this is I mean there are some stakes in this show. Like people people die in this show, and it like I I dude, I absolutely loved it. It it's it's definitely up there with me. It's up there with as far as like animated shows, it's up there with me. Um up there with Clone Wars because you you know how absolutely I love Clone Wars, especially the latter seasons. This does it for me.
SPEAKER_03It's been kind of cool seeing the progression of uh the animation studio um within Lucasfilm over the past decades, you know, starting with I mean we we you could start with the um the the Gendi Close Clone Wars uh like 2D series that they did for Car 2 Network. But moving into like the actual Canon stuff, we we do have um a lot of really cool uh they they kind of just played it straight with like a CG world with Clone Wars. Then they went a little bit more stylistic with Rebels, where the characters were a little little more uh elongated, a little skinnier. Um lightsabers were a lot skinnier. They ended up keeping the lightsabers skinny past that point, but the the character profiles eventually shifted back to Clone Wars um with the Bad Batch. Um But with the Bad Batch, they started doing a textured look uh that you can really see play out uh to great effect with Maul, because by the time you're at Maul, you this like every frame looks like a painting, you know, and I I think that it's just it's just such a cool trend transition um stylistically. And actually, uh episode eight, uh that's the one with the flashbacks, correct? You actually do get uh some flashbacks to Clone Wars models, you know, like uh the Emperor Palpatine's like uh very very distinct uh chin um from Clone Wars. I thought that that was pretty fun, but um you got a couple different styles in in those flashbacks that I don't know. I I think just just stylistically, I feel like this is such an important show for Lucasfilm. Um and there were a couple shots where I was just like, oh, that's that's a great, that's a great shot. That's great blocking, that's great lighting, you know, just the the the the the framework and directing overall. I think that was for me the highlight uh with this this series.
Voice Casting Hits And Misses
SPEAKER_05Um since we're talking about kind of the the aspects, uh how about the voice acting? Were you uh uh good with the choices they made?
SPEAKER_03Uh I there was one choice I didn't care for. Um I liked pretty much everything. Um I didn't feel like Dennis Haysbert uh was the right voice for Master Um what's his name? Ikodaki.
SPEAKER_05Do you uh are you familiar with Dennis Hazbert's uh work? Anthony, are you?
SPEAKER_03I mean, I've seen him in things. I I don't like I'm not uh I don't I don't follow his career.
SPEAKER_05I hit very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. That's why I ask Joe Boo to help.
SPEAKER_03Uh I Oh yeah, he was in major league. He was in major league.
SPEAKER_05I was so excited to hear his voice. So like for me it was kind of like a little bit of uh uh I enjoyed him. Obviously, Whitware is uh amazing. Do you guys know who Brendan Lawson uh Brent wait Brender Lawson is? Who's the voice actor who played him is it's the uh actor who played Pablo Escobar on Narcos. So I I had no idea that he was actually uh you know bilingual. And uh I was looking it up and I and I was like, wait, who? And I I clicked and yeah, sure enough, it's uh it's a good old friend Pablo Escobar, you know, just sitting there alone. Yeah, that's true. You know, sitting alone in a room.
SPEAKER_03I did like his voice. I thought that yeah, his his uh his Latin accent really added some some character um to you know to the team. Um I'm looking at the cast now. I did not re realize uh Chris uh Diamantopoulos, which is uh he's been in a couple things. He was in Arrested Development, he was the guy with the face blindness in season four of Arrest Development. Um but he's he's also like the vo he's been the voice of like Mickey Mouse for the past like decade. So like he's just got a very uh uh just a very diverse voice. But yeah, I didn't really like Master Ikodaki's voice. I I wanted him to he he he kind of reminded me of like Master Splinter. Um and I wanted that voice, you know, like that's the that's the voice that I kind of like felt would have fit. I still like the character, but um, you know, they all die like chumps anyway.
SPEAKER_05Well what did you think, Anthony? Did you like uh the most of the choices they made?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I I don't I don't think I I had any gripes with any of the voice casting. I think that they I think that they they they did a great job. I mean the what what was being performed in the voice and what was being shown on the screen was um was done well. I I I absolutely I would say that there's very little that I could say that I don't like about the show. Um and I'm trying to think of of things that I've probably have gripes of, but there nothing comes to my mind right
Who Is The Good Guy
SPEAKER_00now.
SPEAKER_05Who's your favorite? I'm gonna say like because Maul is kind of like the protagonist, I would say. Like if you like look at it from right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean he's a he's a prantagonist.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but because because he's so weird because he's not what's weird about him is that you know he's not like full sale, you know, breaking bad, right? Like he he's not completely it's like you know, he's he's really out for himself more than like just being evil. Like it seemed like he, you know, like he was fighting along um Master Splinter, I can't remember his actual name. Uh, you know, and it seemed like they were working together and everything was going well, and then he just like doesn't help. And it it makes it weird. Like, so who's the like at the end of the last episode? Like, who are the who's the good who's a is there a good guy? Is there any good guy in this at all? Yeah, lives on, right? Because Lawson seems a little bit dirty. I mean his son seems Riley seems pretty pure. Uh we know that uh Devon, you know, she's got her her leanings now.
SPEAKER_03I mean, there's this is this is honestly the the route that the book of Boba Fett should have taken. Because Boba Fett is not a good guy. He's he shouldn't be. There was no reason for him there for them to make him a um like a good character, right? Um I I liked the idea of him, you know, like becoming a mob boss, um, but at least do a little bit of what he's known for, which is bounty hunting at the same time, you know, um, not just like becoming daimyo of a boss or daimyo of a crime syndicate and deciding we're gonna do we're gonna turn this city around, you know, like that what were they thinking? Um with Maul, they know who this character is, they know where he's got to end, um, and they don't make any I don't think they in terms of like his arc, it's perfect, you know, like he's he's still on this, you know, uh this path where the whole galaxy has let him down, you know, like he was promised huge things. He was gonna be the the the the second in command Sith uh and he was for a brief period of time, and then he decided he was gonna uh go on a speeder chase, almost run down um a little boy in the in the middle of uh the in the middle of Tatooine. Like he was about to run down little Annie, and then 30 years later, uh little Annie's not so little anymore, is he? You know?
SPEAKER_00Um isn't that insane like that? We got that in this in this show.
SPEAKER_03That like I love that he doesn't even talk. I love that he doesn't even talk.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's just like and and it's so amazing. What I love about Anakin here, man, is the way like he uh obviously Darth, right? Not only is he silent, but like the way he fights, he's not even like trying to really outsword you, right? He's just like, I'm gonna drop things on you all the time. Like, like he's just using the element, like the you know, the telekinesis part so effectively that it's uh it's like he's learned like he doesn't even need to be a good fighter, and that's such a departure from Anakin. And I loved watching it here because it's like that early where where he still could be that sword fighter, but he's not anymore. He's he's just a bruiser.
SPEAKER_03And I love how quickly Maul realized what he was dealing with. Um, where you know, just maybe 30 seconds into his fight with with Vader, he realized, you're not an inquisitor, are you?
SPEAKER_00Uh you know, you know what I also liked, and and this is something that you don't really think about, especially with the original movies, is that you know, is Darth Vader like really is he really known? Like he might be known to a small group of people, maybe the even in the originals, like the rebels, they knew you know they probably heard of things, but like commoners, did they really know who Darth Vader was? You know, like Darth Maul like went up against him. He's like, I know this is like fairly this is fairly short, like after um this is shortly after uh what do you call it, Order 66? And
Vader As Myth And Monster
SPEAKER_00and you know, it kind of it gets you thinking, like, there's obviously a lot of people out there that don't that know that or that they don't know about Vader. They know about the Emperor because he's more of like a he's a he's a figurehead, but like Vader's that like Vader's essentially the Emperor's shadow, right? SPEAKER_03He's a he's a shadow lord. Yeah. Um I what I like about That's good. Sorry, I had to throw that in there. Uh no, well you're onto something, Anthony. Like Vader is not well known in the galaxy. He is not a figurehead like Palpatine, where he eventually he he every now and then goes on uh the hollow nut and you know tells the galaxy how prosperous everything is. Um he is in the background doing Sith stuff, you know, like it's only pretty much in uh you know the the the later years of the Empire, like at the um Galactic Civil War, the rebellion and everything, that's when he really attaches himself to um the goings on in the empire, and he he's always empire adjacent throughout all throughout this period um of what 19 years or whatever. Um he's he's always empire adjacent because obviously his master is the emperor and he lives on a Star Destroyer. But um, in terms of like the everyday dude, no, they actually made like a series of comics. I forget what the name of the comic was now, but basically it was like myths and legends uh that people had of Vader from across the galaxy. Like he was this mythological bad guy that just popped up every now. He was a boogeyman, you know? Um, and that's basically what happened here. He just kind of showed up and uh breathed really heavy and just started like tearing down folds.
SPEAKER_00He's essentially a boogeyman, like for real, though.
SPEAKER_03Like he didn't say a single word this entire show.
SPEAKER_00Like he You don't, yeah, you don't you don't want to go up against Vader at all?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um did you guys know that like when when the Inquisitor was just like uh talking to someone on like um hologram, did you pick up that it was gonna be Vader? Or did you think, oh, maybe it's Palpatine, oh maybe it's uh First Brother or anything like that? What did you guys think?
SPEAKER_05I always I mean I don't know. I mean, I I've also played the what games are they?
SPEAKER_00I thought it was the other one that showed up. The one the hooded one.
SPEAKER_05Okay. I thought it was um I I I guess maybe it's just because of the what's the Calcastus game. The two game Force Unleashed Yeah, the Force Unleashed. Uh no, no, that's uh why are you you're messing me up. Force Unleashed is the Star Starkiller is in this show.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean Sam Sam Whitware.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I love that game. Uh no, but the Witwood Kestas where you're fighting Pardon, the Inquisitors. Um I just they they reported Fallen Order Fall in order. They reported to Vader in that. So I'll be honest with you, like nothing I can't tell you that anything from the show conf like told me it was Vader. I just was like, oh, that's Vader, you know. So when he came out, I was like, Oh yeah, like there he goes, that's Vader. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, there was also remember they the the lesser inquisitors also reported to the Grand Inquisitor.
SPEAKER_03Oh, true. Yes, yeah. Yeah, it could have been it could have been the Grand Inquisitor too.
SPEAKER_05See, that that's where I'm this is where the games because like I thought he was like like horribly injured or something. Um so I wasn't I wish that there was like a timeline so I would have been able to know this.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if anyone does that, but uh this is this is early early on in in the Empire days. This is I don't remember how how how short after Order 66, but it's there.

SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I mean like I was yeah either way Grand Inquisitor is so he Grand Inquistor is definitely around.
SPEAKER_05Um because Cal Cast because the the Fallen Order games happened like right after the Clone Wars, I thought.
SPEAKER_03Or uh no, he's 10 years, maybe he lives probably I think it's like so.
SPEAKER_05My apologies. Yeah, either way, I guess I was just presuming maybe I just wanted it to be Vader, you know, like I wanted to see Vader.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I I expected Vader personally, just because um that's who the Inquisitorious reports to. Like that's that's who they're under. So I was just like, Lord, I guess it could be Palpatine, but why would they be talking to Palpatine? Guess it could be the Grand Inquisitor, but they don't really call him Lord. Could be Vader, and I was just like, oh no, it's definitely gonna be Vader. Like, that's why why else would I uh that's that's a conversation I had in my head.
Prequel-Style Cuts And Title Card Nitpicks
SPEAKER_03Um, you know what really bothered me? Uh speaking of like a great show that like I have like an irrational hatred for like one little aspect of this the title cards, the episode titles. Um sorry. No, I I saw this on Twitter. Yeah, I I posted about it on Twitter. Basically, it became very obvious to me that the titles were off center. Um like they the the chapter title, uh like the the chapter number, like chapter one, chapter two, chapter three, and then there was a line underneath. And then underneath that line is the episode title. Sometimes it would be like significantly off to the left, and sometimes off to the right, and very few times of out of these 10 episodes was it like notably centered, and it was more often than not like several spaces off center, and it really bugged me because it it you I could you could tell just I could tell as a creator that this was not an intentional choice, like it was intentionally made like whoever did the title cards just you know typed it in, exported, typed it in, exported, typed it in, exported ten times. They didn't look at it. You need to look at this stuff, because like that really bothered. Anthony, I'm gonna send you, I'm gonna send you um uh those title cards.
SPEAKER_00Something that I did really enjoy and it brought me back to the prequels were um scene transitions. Did you notice like how the scene transitions were very like um prequel-esque where they would kind of like hardwired the the scene would kind of close in on itself?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I really I I like I like that. I mean even like during uh just the the music the musical notes that they hit during some like uh during that final that fight between Mall and Master and Vader, where and you hear Darth Vader's theme playing as they're as they're battling, uh just Master Eco Dio never happening. Sorry. That's uh one syllable too much, maybe. I don't know. I can't uh can't follow along. It reminded me of Avatar, man. Just no more no memorable names, you know. True.
SPEAKER_03Well you did you remember Devin? I did. They never tell us fair though. I I have they never they never tell us the last name, but she does have one. I dated I dated in Devon, so that was kind of easy for me to remember.
SPEAKER_05If they would just contact me and just ask me like all my former flames, that then I would remember every name. Like Master didn't have a boyfriend, didn't have a girlfriend for two years, you know. That I'd remember that one, you know.

SPEAKER_05I mean, he's he's the right like he doesn't have to be in it necessarily for us to know that like he's what he did with Maul was crazy because like he turned his back on like the the Sith the Sith have like uh you know obviously very little allegiance to each other generally, but he just like hypes this guy up and then like he makes him a really tortured soul. Uh and he does the same to Anakin. I mean like he's just the worst, like he takes these people and makes their lives terrible, uh, all for his benefit. Uh so I don't I just find both of them they're like and they're literally the children of a really like warp and twisted father, right? Like if you take kids, they have that whole nerd nature versus nurture, you know, and and and you are really terrible to those kids, you know, you can raise them in a way where they they become like this, and he's had his hand in the formative years of both of these people.

Two Boots As Chaos Engine
SPEAKER_03Two Boots. Two Boots is the actual villain of this story. Multiple times, multiple times. This guy's like, don't do it, don't do it. I'll turn you off if you do it. No, seriously, two boots. Let's you know, let's roll it back. We don't want this. These people do not belong here. Two boots, don't do it. Two boots does it, two boots ruins everybody's life.
SPEAKER_00Um, seriously, like the the absolute worst that could happen, like actually happened. Like every everything that he said was. Going to happen, literally happened.
SPEAKER_03Oh my gosh. I do like two boots just because it's a droid named Two Boots. He wears two boots until he doesn't. And you know why? Because the Emperor, because you Two Boots did this to yourself. And you know, he never says sorry. He just never does he?
SPEAKER_05I don't actually advises for turning him off. And then he's like the next day or something, like you know, Lawson's like still being a little kind of uh gentle with him. And he says something like, Oh, you don't have to worry about that. I'm not uh angry at you for uh shutting me off anymore. Like, we can move on.
SPEAKER_03So, like in his in two boots' like matrix, like I I was looking, I was like, I I was holding my head like I cannot believe this guy's just gonna let two boots off with uh with a don't worry about it, buddy. Um yeah you're you're focusing on the wrong thing here, Two Boots. You're you your huge mistake is the reason these Inquisitors have taken my son.
SPEAKER_00Um seriously. Um I really I really liked Lawson a lot though. I thought his character was I liked it's like we got um we we did a a detective movie last week and then now we have a show with like one of the main characters is is a detective also and I mean dude, I thought his character was awesome. Um I like that that he is very you know he's just he's very he doesn't like the Empire and he wasn't he didn't he didn't buy the the lie of like the Jedi which gets you thinking like if he you know if you have a character like that like how many other people were like there's no way you know so I I I really do I I thought his character was
The Big Fights And Maul’s Trajectory
SPEAKER_00cool. Um dude, the the action in the show insane.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. The the whole like ninth and tenth episodes were pretty well like half the ninth episode and the full tenth episode were just like a one prolonged fight sequence. I actually really liked uh Iko Diodaki quite a bit. I I I liked just his calm demeanor. He kind of reminded me of like a Qui-Gon type character, where um, you know, you knew he was gonna. As soon as Maul starts fighting a Padawan and a master, you know the master's gonna not make it. Um it didn't actually happen at Maul's hands, but uh, you know, Anthony, you mentioned the the action. I I decided I was gonna like take a screenshot from episode nine that where like five force users clash lightsabers at the same time. I don't think there's ever been a scene like that ever, where there's there's two light guy, two light side, one like uh guy in between, and then two inquisitor or two bad guys, two obviously bad guys, uh clashing lightsabers at the exact same moment. I think that that's such a cool, cool scene. Yeah um like I I had to like go back, you know. Like I watched that, I was just like, I have to watch that again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. No, no, I thought that was awesome. We got a lot of that I think that this is when they were trying to escape, like in that like when they went um underground, right? Yeah, yeah, there was a lot of like really cool scenes. Um I I really I really like the the development of of Darth Maul. Like over the years, he he went from he was essentially a tossaway character until we got him in in Clone Wars, right? Or I mean I think they had him in some other like media, but as far as like um like it like a show, we you know that's when we got him again. And so like just over the years of of like what he experienced throughout the the Clone Wars, it it was you know, we got a culmination of that in this show. Like he obviously he has nothing, he really doesn't have anything against the Jedi now, he has no reason to hate the Jedi. Um you know, it's really just yeah, like he's just like for himself, and you know, he he's like, well, he he wants somebody strong to fight alongside him, and so you know, he he disposed of where he had Vader dispose of the master um for him. Ikodiodake, yeah. Yeah, so I was just like I was just like, wow, man, that that that was insane.
SPEAKER_03Um I keep saying Ikodio Daki, and he's just like he's just a death stare. Uh speaking of death stare, yeah, he was the leader of the Mandalorian Death Watch um that decided to, you know, I guess they weren't getting paid enough, or they were doing like too many random like side quests, and they were just like, you know what? Nah. And they left. So Maul was losing um followers left and right. Um you said something, Anthony, like he doesn't really hate the Jedi. And actually, he says something, I forget the line exactly, but he says something along the lines of like he respects them or he respects their order or like what they represented. And I think that's true. Um, you know, as just a force user and an observer of the galaxy as a as a whole, I think he does respect the Jedi quite a bit. He's not ever gonna be a Jedi, he's never gonna um like fall in line with though that teaching, but um, I think he regrets that they are no longer a part of the galaxy um in the way that they were.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he sees that what I what what he was what he was pretty much like set up to be is like a lot worse than than like you know with the Jedi being around. Like everything is like you can't like as as a as somebody that's like below the ranks of of like the the Empire, like you you really just can't do anything around them or you know you're you'll get you know you'll get arres arrested straight to jail straight to jail.
SPEAKER_03Um so yeah, actually, that's a good point because like there are a lot of force users in the galaxy, even with the Jedi gone, especially on the dark side. You have the Emperor, uh Top Honcho, you have uh uh Under Secretary Vader, um, then you have uh the Grand Inquisitor, and then you have like who knows how many Inquisitors there are. They they change the number every every couple every year, really. They add another one or two. Um so there's probably like 18 inquisitors out there just chopping down Jedi's. There's a lot of people with red sabers, and then there's Maul. Um and I kind of like that he's just this forgotten guy, you know, like he's he's the guy that the Emperor just didn't kill, even though he very clearly could have killed um and enjoyed fighting in the Clone Wars. Um like he was toying with Maul in the Clone Wars, man.
SPEAKER_00But that was that was actually like an amazing I I love that fight sequence.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But this is a guy who's literally just been forgotten. He's in he's he's now uh scraping by with the dregs of society, um, trying to hold on to power through um different syndicates. Um and I feel bad for him. I kinda do, because I know where this ends. Like it doesn't end well for this guy. He's just um I think Sam Whitworth put it best, he's he's a Sisyphus character where like he will always be pushing a rock up a mountain, you know, and it's he's never gonna get that rock to the peak. Um and yeah, yeah. Uh Mall Shadow Lord Man. What a what a ride. What a rush. I'm just hoping we get more content with uh Master Eco Diodaki. Just because I feel like I sorry, I feel like um he was cool. He's a cool design too. I don't know I don't remember if we've ever had that specific species before, but um I I it almost looked like a reptilian rat.
SPEAKER_05Like it kind of reminded me of the uh assassin that tried to kill Padme that was like reptilian after it died. It took like a death like it took like uh a poison pill when Obi-Wan was chasing it from uh En Corusat.
SPEAKER_00Oh no. Uh like it's that was a changeling. Is it what? That was a changeling.
SPEAKER_03I think he, I think he is a she. And I think she is a changeling.
SPEAKER_05Um yeah, I he there was uh I do like when uh they they pull something out like that, you know, and I Anthony, you were talking about before, it's like really cool to see this like mole progression, and I really think there's like credit to be given to the comic book writers that really like the comics are really what kind of like kept Darth Maul stewing, you know, and like kept him there for future use.
When Star Wars Works In A Box
SPEAKER_05And there's also a part of me here that thinks like it's like there's certain things that they do the modern Star Wars does so well, and one of them is oddly because you would think that this doesn't normally work, right? But it's like when they're confined to like, you know, like like Rogue One or Andor, right? When they're confined within the lines, like here are the parameters that you have to follow. This can't happen, this can't happen. They're like, Bet, we're gonna be amazing, right? But when you're like, hey, you got all this freedom, they're like, uh, I don't know. Uh let's go back and forth and not really be decisive. And I don't know, it's it's kind of odd to me.
SPEAKER_03I agree, and I think that that's one of the bigger things that like um is both a blessing and a curse for you know, stuff like Rogue One, stuff like Andor, stuff like Maul, perfect, you know. Like we we have these uh confined stories, and I like the way that you put it, um, Rich, where they're in a box and they have to get uh they have to come up with a good story within that box. But but then you have stuff like Book of Boba Fett, which I'm not really a fan of.
SPEAKER_05Um I know you you really like Obi-Wike uh compared to Obi-Wan, like has this surplus.
SPEAKER_03Uh Ahsoka, Ahsoka is another show where I think it's a little too open-ended, um, and we don't really know where that story is going, and I think that that kind of is a detriment to part of it. Um, but I do think that that's the better show to Boca Roba Fett. And then Obi-Wan Kenobi is an interesting one because that one was a confined. Uh like that one is in a box, you know, like, and I think they knocked it inside the park. Um, they did not knock it out of the park.
SPEAKER_04Inside the park home run? No, it was a bug.

SPEAKER_05I don't know. Anthony, can you can you help out? Because you you know I I think you need to be deciding one here. Because I love me some Obi-Wan. Uh am I just misguided?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I I think that that um some of the gripes of Obi-Wan are warranted, but I do think that there is a lot of I think that there is like some saving grace for that show. Um, especially Ewan. Like, like who who doesn't want to see Ewan McGregor reprise that role? Um, you know, but I'm not gonna sit here and be like Obi-Wan's worse than Book of Boba Fett. Nowhere near. Like literally nowhere near. Like Book of Boba Fett's towards the bottom. I would say Obi-Wan is like probably towards the middle, maybe a little bit above the middle.
SPEAKER_05Fair. Alright.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, we we our our Padawan, um, which you know uh anyone with two eyes to see and an ear to hear.
SPEAKER_00What about two boots?
SPEAKER_03And two boots to wear, um could have noticed like from the end of episode one that Maul's definitely gonna try to uh be the tempter and uh pull pull this kid into his his little fold. Um you know he throughout the entire thing he just like bite the apple, you know, like he he's he's not necessarily he's maybe maybe uh the devil is is the wrong comparison here because he's not actually the devil in this story, but he's definitely not a good influence. He's he's the devil on your shoulder. He reminds me of he's that guy.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I'm you know, watching the Daredevil series, right? It's like the interaction between Frank Castle and Karen Page, like he doesn't make her evil, but like being around him goes like, oh, well, that evil is kind of logical, and I get why you do it, right? And that that's almost that that clings to you more in a way, right? Because it's not that like he's just at the end, he just says to her, like, you know, the offer is you can be more powerful so that you can do what you need to do and protect yourself. And that's almost more insidious than like this like he's he's making like a survival skill that she needs to do it.
SPEAKER_00I liked the moment. Um I liked his like kind of he had like a moment where it kind of reminded me of um uh was it Dark Knight Rises when Batman was fighting Bane and he was like hiding in the shadows.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And occasionally, occasionally was uh he wasn't like fighting Devin, but he was like hiding in the shadows, just gave me those vibes. It was bet it it was just done better, like in this.
SPEAKER_03You know what the surprising um connection between this show and another Star Wars property was for
Solo Links And Crimson Dawn Threads
SPEAKER_03me. I mean, it's not it shouldn't be surprising because um it's heavily hinted at in this other property, but st solo a Star Wars story, you know, like they they really heavily uh I got that too. They they they really heavily um pulled from that story to connect this story too. And um in in the you know, between the comics, certain books, and now Maul Um uh Shadow Lord, we have kind of like this subuniverse of stories that revolve around the Crimson Dawn uh side of the universe. You know, we have Dryden Voss here picking up Maul. We know that later Maul is uh running Crimson Dawn. We know that Kira in the comics later runs Crimson Dawn. Um and you know, she she becomes like uh a huge uh thorn in the Emperor's side in the in the comics that you know between um Empire and Return of the Jedi. But I I I just think it's so cool that um even though they don't currently have any plans to make a solo two, um, they have found ways to uh utilize the unfinished stories and create compelling narratives um in in multiple directions. You know, they have a prequel novel with Kira, they have that uh multi-arc uh comic series that um was a big crossover event with with Kira called Crimson Rain. Um now we have sh uh like Mall's side of the story with um you know it's a it's a prequel to solo Star Wars story, in a way, um where you know he's becoming acquainted with the with Dryden Voss and Um Crimson Dawn. I I just I I I love that this is such an interconnected world. And one thing that Star Wars in particular is nauseatingly good at is timeline management. Like they do not get it wrong. Um there have been issues where like they like they retcon things, but in terms of like your average Star Wars content, they got their timeline on lock. Like they know exactly where everything is at the universe. Um and I I don't think I know of another franchise that does it better than than Star Wars does it.
SPEAKER_00One Piece.
SPEAKER_05Do you think they like they really like kind of kind of like get all of the juice they can out of like having a good timeline? Like, is do you get that feeling? Like just that they're squeezing all the juice out of like having an effective timeline.
SPEAKER_03Um, you know, actually, going back, Anthony, you you mentioned One Piece. The only thing that I would say there is that that's um one long narrative. Whereas Star Wars is a bunch, is like hundreds of different little stories, but they all fit like a puzzle. And that's that's what I mean by timeline management, like in in terms of like just franchise collecting.
SPEAKER_00It it is and it isn't, because One Piece is one long narrative, but there's a lot of small little narratives that are kind of like interconnected, yeah. They're they're kind of going forward, but then you have different um the different characters have different motivations, and you know, there's callbacks to things that seemed like they were one-offs. So like they they kind of they're like what it when I say like they their their like timeline is like tight, it's like stuff that was done like 20 years ago, they find a way to fit it in even in the present. Like right now, and they're they're in LBAF. They talked that they did LBAF a long time ago.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of um LBAF in One Piece, in that show or in that series, they have uh devil fruits. I don't think there are fruits in Maul, but I can make the exception because it is a quite juicy story.
SPEAKER_00There is that sludge that they were like the acidic sludge, remember?
SPEAKER_03How could I forget the acidic sludge? Um, and you know what? I'm sure that when two boots had to take his two boots off, I'm sure that was a lot of there was a lot of like residual oil and stuff in there that you know, just how long has he been wearing those two boots for? Extremely juicy feet um from this this uh droid. Anyway, um I'm I'm getting ahead of myself.

Fario’s Play And Final Character Beats

Uh he's tiny and squirrely and then randomly like brave, but he shouldn't be, you know, like when he like goes to try to like square off against the uh the stormtroopers, and he's like, Okay, you got this, you got this, and he like talks. himself up and then you know I I just uh I really I really like this character I thought he's uh he's kind of like the comic relief a little bit I I I liked Fario a lot as well. I I do have a question when he goes to the pikes and he is saying you know he's he he has this undermined uh plot to betray Maul is he in it with Maul to pretend that he's taking down Maul yeah that's that's that's what they watched because they never really explained the way like he takes down Maul and then he's like you know tell him that I took him down you know like then that for some reason something about the way he said that and then them being chummy chummy later I was like oh no no no they he had this set up this was Maul's plan all along to kind of get in there and then like face off against the pikes like it was you know like the way that Palpatine sent you know like oh don't worry my new apprentice will take care of you type thing you know it was it was I think it was all a ruse um I feel like Maul would have addressed it big time if it was a yeah right like if it was a true betrayal um like Maul probably I would have been like okay you know what though at the same time if anyone's gonna ignore betrayal it would also be Maul you know like he's the kind of guy that's just like he'll just look at you and be like alright let's continue well but but he would have said something like very sly and very very eloquently about it. Yeah like a little lie you're right you're right say say say something say something that he would say Dakota Well done Vario uh but you didn't have to shoot my other dude uh you didn't have to you don't have to stun my guy um uh anyway uh Rich before the show you mentioned that you had a um parallel oh to another show so it was just that we had done major league a couple weeks ago and I was so excited like when I looked up the name I thought I recognized of course I know Dennis Haysbert's name uh voice better as Pedro Soprano right so when I heard it I was like wait a minute when I ever looked it up I was like no way like it's so weird that we just because you know there aren't a lot of Dennis Haisbert projects that all of us are going to end up watching so the fact that we watched two of his projects in the span of a month is kind of uh kind of kind of weird wacky and kooky that's a strange world we live in folks um but yeah he he ended up playing Master Icodiodaki at this guy is such a flexer over here I can remember names it's such a fun name to say I don't know why you people that's like when you start at work somewhere and somebody like learns your name really quickly but you don't know theirs and it feels like they're flexing on you every time they see you they're like good morning Dakota good to see you Dakota and you're like okay you're being very aggressive with my name could you just stop showing off that you know it because I usually just go see see see they only do it because they know it bothers you when you when you when you just like not don't care then they just then they stop I the little secret about me is I've never mastered the art of I don't care Tisk Tisk Mr Mr Old Man as you like to proudly say all right so guys we're we're covering Godzilla King of the monsters next week for episode 162.

SPEAKER_03That's a 2019 movie um starring Millybobby Broom and uh what's my homework before that just so I yes so you're gonna be covering or you're gonna be watching Godzilla 2014 by Gareth Edwards and um Kong Skull Island. Godzilla Kong oh yeah we we we did cover that right we did we did skull island we actually really I think we really liked it like I think we weren't uh expecting to like it as much as we did but we we really liked it um okay Godzilla 2014 and uh skull island and then Godzilla King of the monsters right or is there something else so three uh godzilla Godzilla King of the Monsters is the one that we're actually covering yeah right right so so it would be three that he can yeah basically if you can so there's also a show called Skull Island that's not what we're talking about should I watch that too that is that is connected but it's if we ever cover that that'll be a later that'll be a later Monsterverse episode.
